On the cover: A Wedgwood vase of tree-trunk form, shape 256 in the company's first ornamental ware shape book, marked WEDGWOOD, 8 1/4" (21.0 cm) h., Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight. The first certain listing of shape 256 in Wedgwood's oven books is for the biweekly period beginning January 4, 1783, "256 6 & 5 Cuped flower pots lalock & green leaves and white." It is of note that such objects were assigned shape numbers, and a careful comparison of the shape books to the records in the surviving oven books permits an estimate of the date of first production of many Wedgwood objects. See pages 10 to 35 and figure 23 on p. 23. Photograph reproduced by courtesy of the Trustees of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside.
