Prized Possessions: Ceramics from the collection of Lloyd E. and Vivian S. Hawes

Speaker: Carolyn Parsons Roy
Associate Curator of the Strawberry Banke Museum, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

The Strawberry Banke Museum recently acquired 250 ceramic objects from the collection of Dr. Lloyd and Vivian Hawes, ranging in date from the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. This lecture will focus on British ceramics from the Hawes collection, which illustrate the major developments that took place in the ceramics industry in the eighteenth century. Design sources will be noted and comparisons made between the various ceramic bodies manufactured during the period, particularly earthenwares, stonewares, and porcelains. A specialist in historic interiors, Ms. Roy will also discuss how artifacts from the Hawes collection can be linked to archaeological material excavated in Portsmouth, thus illustrating the availability and use of these wares in the seaport town.

Place: Sotheby's 1334 York Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY

Date: Thursday, October 11, 2001
